concept #4 codes and conventions

these are the (generally unspoken ) rules that media products follow

very few things ever come along that break the rules and break new ground...some examples would be: nirvana, toy story, big brother, seinfeld

fruit cart
car chase cars explode
unlimited gear shifting
protruding baguette
the rules of horror films
L shaped sheets

concept #3 creeds (values)

these are the values of the media....what's ok to be shown / what's not ok to be shown....generally they reflect society but it is important to remember that almost all of our media is controlled by a few people

the debate over homosexuality in the media which involved the ellen show is a good example

the Danish newspaper ad shows that different cultures have different creeds

Ozzy in Canada = swearing
Ozzy in USA = beeps
cop killer
99 problems
nudity ....nipplegate

concept #2b construction (constructs reality)

the argument which constantly rages about the role the media has in influencing our behaviour, thoughts, actions

do violent video games make us more violent etc?
but also how the media can shape our perceptions.......despite the fact that crime has been dropping for the last forty years, most people are convinced it is on the increase
the media can construct a reality

mean world syndrome
afraid of the wrong things

concept #2a construction (careful constructions)

everything in the media is carefully constructed....everything...nothing happens by accident....Truman's life is an extreme example of this

the McDonald's ads
print and tv
celebrity scandals
Kim K wedding / divorce fiasco

concept #1 commercial

the media exists solely to make money....nothing necessarily wrong with that as long as we aware that the is (almost exclusively) its sole purpose

whether something is "good" or not is mostly irrelevant....does it make money?
remember the shows are to draw you to the ads.....that's the point

Facebook
product placement
any advertising
data tracing
everything

friday oct 14..the plan

here's the plan for today

in the library

1. many groups have video footage on s: drive already....if so , open in windows moviemaker (in lab) UNDER CAPTURE VIDEO / IMPORT VIDEO and edit from there (we are aiming for 30 seconds ...but 45 secs or 60 secs are quite common commercial lengths)
if not familiar with the program, follow instructions on left of screen

Very Important: if finished or not , save it to a s: file (your own).....UNDER FINISH MOVIE / SAVE TO MY COMPUTER it should take 1-3 mins to finish saving and it should have .wmv ending ....you should be able to view it right there

if you don't save it properly, you will lose you edited work....you do not want this to happen

those groups who did not get footage off camera previously should find their work at:
W:\mcgmedia
take it from there and save it in a group member's s drive .....then open in movie maker

once finished editing footage, groups should be trying to add music (need mp3s on computer via usb stick etc) and/or credits/transitions to the spoof to make it more effective.....make it awesome...funny and true about the product

2. first order of business is the video editing which is a group effort as is the storyboard ....it should be updated to reflect the shots in the finished video...more storyboards avaialable.....to be handed in monday

3. next is the print ad to accompany the tv commercial ...this is individual but should have the same general idea as the commercial....this should look like an actual 8.5x11 print ad....except it spoofs instead of selling the product
therefore everyone in the group will have his / her own print ad to be submitted

google : ADBUSTERS SPOOF ADS for good ideas/examples
print them off in colour to be handed in or hand in electronically at:
V:\mcguchan media

4. if finished, update blogs (there are more added)

see you Monday.....have a good weekend everyone
